06

Does Wild Earth food meet AAFCO requirements?

Yes, our food meets the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for Maintenance. We believe this is a baseline requirement and will always strive to exceed AAFCO guidelines to ensure exceptional product quality and safety. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies.

07

Did Wild Earth conduct tests with real dogs when developing this food?

Yes, our dog food and treats have been tested through humane volunteer testing, supervised by a panel of vets and scientists. Both acceptability and digestibility studies have shown excellent results.

08

Why do you use GMO and non-organic ingredients?

We are a science driven company and we believe genetically modified
organisms (GMOs) offer a safe, reliable, and sustainable option for the
production of food. Before reaching the market, GMO crops go through 7-10 years of testing to ensure nutritional standards
Many of the myths and misconceptions surrounding GMOs come from a lack
of understanding behind the science as well as the history of our food
system. The World Health Organization, American Medical Association, and
British Royal Society - among others - have concluded that GMO crops
are as safe as crops cultivated otherwise. Lastly, because of the
reliability of GMOs they produce more efficient yields that maximize the
land on which they're grown, making them more sustainable than those
grown organically.

Do dogs need meat?

The simple answer is that dogs are omnivores and can thrive on a variety of diets as long as they get their core nutrients.

If you’ve turned on the TV or browsed the internet recently, you’ve likely seen an ad for dog food that compares your pet to wolves. The media is constantly inundating us with the idea that our dogs are descendants of the great, mighty wolf—prowling the forests hunting down their dinner of meat with a side of more meat.

In reality, 15,000 years separate our pets from their ancestors. Even when wolves and dogs weren’t so biologically different, they were more likely to be hunting down a rabbit and eating it right after the kill, rather than dining on beef and pork.

Ok, fine - but, scientifically speaking, do dogs need meat? The answer is yes...and no - what dogs need is protein. Learn More

Is your food suitable for puppies?

We chose our first food to meet and exceed adult dog nutritional requirements (an adult being defined as 1 year or older). AAFCO (the governing body in the US for dog nutrition) has different guidelines and nutritional standards for different life stage claims - including puppy, adult and senior. This is why you see “puppy foods” and “adult dog foods.”

You could check with your vet to see if it would be alright to supplement some of our food into your puppy's diet!

What we know about canine DCM and its link to diet?

Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disease of the heart muscle, which results in dilation of the heart chambers. This, in turn, decreases the ability of the heart to pump efficiently, leading to buildup of fluid in the chest and abdomen, known as congestive heart failure. Two forms of DCM exist- primary and secondary. Primary DCM is presumed to be a hereditary disease, while secondary DCM is non-hereditary and can be caused by factors such as nutrition, infectious disease, and certain medications. Moreover, nutritional causes of secondary DCM can vary from nutrient deficiencies, such as taurine or vitamin B1 deficiency, to levels of nutrients or other dietary compounds, such as heavy metal toxicity. Unlike primary DCM, secondary DCM can improve with diet change. Learn more

15

Don’t dogs need essential fatty acids only found in meat?

Essential fatty acids (such as omega-3, -6, -9) can be found in both plant and animal sources. We source our DHA from algae. Healthy oils and fats, such as those found in canola, sunflower and flaxseed, are an essential part of any dog’s diet. Oils derived from plant sources provide a healthy mix of unsaturated fat (source of energy) and omega fatty acids -3, -6, -9, which are important for maintaining healthy skin and a radiant coat.

17

Does Wild Earth kibble lose nutritional value due to high temperatures used during production?

Our manufacturing facility uses heat extrusion to create our kibble which is a similar process to what many other dog food manufacturers use. The range of cooking temperatures for wild earth kibbles is typically between 140 - 265 degrees F. Extrusion can vary between 140 to 220 and drying is around 265 degrees. Both processes are needed to process the kibbles.

With its lower temperature and short cooking time, heat extrusion minimizes this potential pitfall. We assure to test for everything that meets standard quality checks.

18

Are cats carnivores?

Cats ARE obligate Carnivores but we’ve developed a cat food that has ALL
of the nutrition they require but without the animal ingredients! In
addition, there’s even new and interesting data that supports better
health in cats on nutritionally complete plant based diets published by
Professor Knight and others.

19

Is Wild Earth dog food better than dog food made with meat?

The most problematic ingredient in meat-based dog food is the meat itself. There have been over 180 recalls in pet food since 2009 and almost all of them are from the meat ingredients. Toxic chemicals, euthanasia drugs, animal growth hormones, and harmful bacteria are just some of the things found in the meat in dog food today. Read our series on the state of dog food here.

Furthermore, an allergy to meat is one of the most common food sensitivities found in dogs. A 2016 study found 236 dogs with allergies to animal-based ingredients versus only 77 with allergies to plant-based ingredients.
