Schionpoo Dog Breed History & Facts

by Andrew Ehlert

The schionpoo, also known as "Teddy Bear Dogs" or "Daily Dogs", is a mixed dog breed that is known for its physical appearance and cuddly personality. They are referred to as "Teddy Bear Dogs" because of how similar they look to a toy teddy bear. The breed is rare within the designer dog world because it is a mixture of the Shih Tzu, Bichon Frise, and Poodle. The exact genetic ratio can vary but the breed is well sought after because of its cuddly appearance.

In this article, we are going to learn more about the Schionpoo dog breed and help you understand if they are the right dog breed for you and your family.

Schionpoo Breed History

The Schionpoo breed first originated in the early 1980s when dog breeders began taking purebred dog breeds and breeding them together to combine their different personality traits and physical characteristics. This trend is what started the "designer dog" movement and is known to introduce a variety of new dog breeds. Dog breeders during this time began crossbreeding Poodles, Shih Tzus, and Bichon Frises in order to create the Schionpoo.

The breed can have a difference in genetic makeup based on the ratio of genetics and breeds of the parent dogs. This is why some Schionpoos will look different compared to others. The breed has grown in popularity in recent years because of the designer fashion of the breed but also because of their cuddly appearance and because they are great indoor house dogs.

Schionpoo Parents

The parent breeds of the Schionpoo are the Shih Tzu, Poodle, and Bichon Frise. Depending on the dog breeder you get your Schionpoo from, the genetic ratio of the Schionpoo puppy will vary. The puppy could have more genetic similarities to a Poodle, a Shih Tzu, or a Bichon Frise. This is why most Schionpoo breeders will label the parents and genetic history of each puppy they sell.

Schionpoo Physical Appearance

Schionpoos are known for their fluffy and cuddly appearance. They are often referred to as "Teddy Bear Dogs" because they look like little teddy bears. This makes the breed incredibly popular. The fur color of Schionpoos will typically be brown but the breed can range from brown, white, black, gray, or a combination of many different colors.

Schionpoo Size

The average adult Schionpoo will grow to be anywhere from 8lbs to 18lbs depending on the size of the parents. The genetics of the parents can cause the breed to grow larger or smaller but your breeder will be able to give you a height and weight estimation based on the size of the parents.

Schionpoo Are Hypoallergenic

Another fact that makes the Schionpoo breed incredibly popular is the fact that the breed is hypoallergenic. This means they shed less and produce less fur dander which makes them a great option for individuals who suffer from allergies. Their fur will typically be curly or wavy because the breed comes from Poodles, Shih Tzus, and Bichon Frise.

Schionpoo Personality

Schionpoos may be known for their small and cuddly physical appearance but they are also known for their affectionate and cuddly personality. Most Schionpoos will love to play and have a good time but will always be ready to cuddly and take a nap in your arms. Their size makes them the perfect lapdog and they will love every minute of love you and your family give to them.

Schionpoo Life Expectancy

The average Schionpoo will typically have a life expectancy of 12-16 years depending on their genetics, lifestyle, and diet. They are known to live long and happy lives and have great genetics from their parent breeds.
