National Take Your Dog To Work Day

by Andrew Ehlert

All pet parents would love to spend the entire day with their furry friends but most individuals will have to spend the majority of the day at work. Well on Friday, June 24th, 2022 you might be able to bring your dog to work with you! June 24th marks the 24th annual National Take Your Dog To Work Day!

Not every workplace or employer will allow you to bring your dog into the workplace but they might be willing to let you bring your pup to work this month to help you celebrate this National Holiday! Let's learn more about this holiday and how you can safely celebrate with your dogs.

What Is National Take Your Dog To Work Day?

National Take Your Dog To Work Day (TYDTWDay) was first created and first celebrated in 1999 by the Pet Sitters International Group. The group created this holiday in an effort to encourage businesses to be more dog friendly, allow workers to bring companion animals into the workplace, but also to promote dog adoptions from local shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies.

The group hoped that creating this holiday would encourage dogless co-workers to adopt but would also bring awareness to local shelters and make the community as a whole more dog-friendly.

How Can I Celebrate?

If this holiday sounds like something you would like to be a part of then we recommend you start the conversation with your employer, workplace, and coworkers. Not all employers or workplaces will be willing to allow dogs on the premises because of safety reasons but if possible, this is a great holiday to bring attention to.

If your employer or workplace is open to celebrating on Friday, June 24th, 2022 then you should start preparing to provide your dog with an enjoyable and safe trip to your work!

Tips For Bringing Your Dog To Work

If you are thinking about taking your dog to work with you it is important that you think through everything in order to give your dog the best experience possible. This means you should plan through a few key details in order to keep your dog calm, make sure they are relaxed, and make sure they have a blast on their new adventure!

Below are a few tips to keep in mind when planning on bringing your dog to work.

Consider Your Dog's Personality

Thinking about your dog's personality is important when you plan on bringing your dog to work. Some dogs are more outgoing and will enjoy the social aspect of meeting new people in a new environment but this type of adventure could also be stressful for other dogs depending on their personality.

It is important to know your dog's personality so that you can tailor the experience towards their needs. If your dog is skittish or can get stressed out when meeting new people it is best to keep the introductions brief and spread out so your dog isn't meeting dozens of people at the same time.

Make Sure To Pack Their Belongings

When bringing your dog to work it is important to bring all of your dog's essential belongings. You need to make sure your dog has everything they need to thrive and be comfortable. This includes their daily food, water, and essential medication but it can also include items that will keep them comfortable.

Many workers who bring their dogs to work will pack their dog's favorite toys to keep them entertained. You should also think about bringing your dog's bed or blanket to lay on to help them be more comfortable as you work.

Make Sure To Take Breaks

Everyone knows that taking a break from work or sitting at your desk is important but many individuals will struggle to take routine breaks. When you are bringing your dog to work it is important to take a routine break to let your dog go to the bathroom and get some fresh air. You always want to give your dog the chance to use the restroom as well as time to get fresh air and socialize with your coworkers.

Watch Out For Workplace Dangers

If you plan on bringing your dog to work it is vital that your office space is safe for your dog. Make sure your office or workplace is clean and doesn't contain any dangerous ingredients or items that your dog might interact with. This could include removing poisonous plants, and hiding wires or electrical cords. When working with your dog you should always keep an eye on them to make sure they don't get into trouble but keeping your workplace clean and safe can go a long way in keeping your dog safe.
